What is MEHA (me-hah)?

MEHA celebrates museums, entertainment, history and art. All within easy walking distance of each other, this diverse group of venues offers an ever changing calendar of exhibitions, plays, concerts, classes and activities—all located in a thriving downtown known for its art galleries, live music and locally owned shops and restaurants.

MEHA is an initiative of The District organized in collaboration with the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs and is supported, in part, by the Missouri Arts Council.

LAWS OBSERVATORY

The Laws Observatory is located on the roof of the Physics Building on the University of Missouri–Columbia campus, at the northwest corner of the intersection of Rollins and College Avenues. The Observatory is open on clear Wednesday nights with hours of viewing from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Public telescope viewing is sponsored by the Department of Physics & Astronomy of the University of Missouri-Columbia and the Central Missouri Astronomical Association, in collaboration with NASA´s Missouri Space Grant Consortium. The equipment available includes a 16–inch telescope. No reservations are necessary.

MISSOURI THEATRE CENTER FOR THE ARTS

The Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts (MTCA) is a fully restored, historic theater dedicated to local, regional and nationally-recognized visual and performing art. The 'Blind' Boone Ragtime & Early Jazz Festival, the Plowman Chamber Music Competition, the Columbia Art League, the "We Always Swing" Jazz Series and the True/False Film Festival all find a home at the Theatre. MTCA also hosts a number of youth programs as well as a young professionals group who sponsors events ranging from film nights to rooftop meet and greets.

What is the Museum of Anthropology? A window on Native American lifeways. Tantalizing views of Missourians from thousands of years ago. Slices of Missouri's pioneer and rural history. Collections documenting cultures from across the globe. The home of the world's most comprehensive archery collection. The State of Missouri's archaeological curation facility and so much more. Guided tours of museum exhibits and other public programs are available to area schools, community organizations, and other interested groups. Additionally, the Museum provides a variety of opportunities for students to gain experience in museum methods and practices, including museum courses offered through the Department of Anthropology.

MUSEUM OF ART & ARCHAEOLOGY

The Museum of Art and Archaeology is the only accredited museum in mid-Missouri, and the 15,000 objects in its collections include a Samuel H. Kress study collection of masterpieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Other highlights include European and American painting, sculpture and decorative arts; Medieval and Byzantine art; and an antiquities collection. The Cast Galley contains replicas of over 50 major works from the 4th and 5th Century B.C. and the Gallery of Contemporary and Modern Art includes pieces from Chihuly to Warhol. The Museum also hosts a number of events throughout the year, ranging from the Paintbrush Ball and the Film Series for adults to hands-on workshops and flashlight tours for the kids.

STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MISSOURI

Founded in 1898, The State Historical Society of Missouri is the preeminent research facility for the study of the Show Me State´s heritage and a leader in programming designed to share that heritage with the public. Whether through educational settings, such as the Missouri History Speakers´ Bureau and genealogy workshops, or the performing arts, such as MoHiP Theater, the Society not only brings Missouri history to the state´s citizens, but also gives Missourians the tools they need to uncover history in their own lives. The Historical Society also houses an extensive collection of art, including pieces from famed Missouri artists George Caleb Bingham and Thomas Hart Benton as well as one of the largest collections of editorial cartoons.

STEPHENS COSTUME MUSEUM

The Costume Museum & Research Library, begun in 1958, has grown by donations from alumnae, friends and designers to include more than 12,000 garments and accessories dating back to 1790. Pieces include representations of ethnic wear; everyday clothes of women, men and children; and an impressive list of designer garments. Oleg Cassini and Arnold Scaasi recently contributed more than 200 garments to the collection. Among the many other designers represented are Gilbert Adrian, Bill Blass, Bonnie Cashin, Chanel, Courreges, Madame Etta, Claire McCardell, Norman Norell, Oscar de la Renta and Valentino.

UNIVERSITY CONCERT SERIES

The University Concert Series provides world-class entertainment designed to engage, educate and entertain the Mid-Missouri community. Broadway musicals, classical, blues, comedy, children's theater, international, rock and roll and country performers all grace the stage of Jesse Auditorium. Past performers include B.B. King, Itzhak Perlman, Huey Lewis and the News, Bill Cosby, Bonnie Raitt and Mannheim Steamroller. The Concert Series is based out of Jesse Hall on the University of Missouri quadrangle so make sure your visit includes a walk through the historic columns.
